My Top 10 Manhwas and why

Manhwa is a general term used for South Korean style comics which you will often find released in Webtoon. Unlike most Manga style from Japan, Manhwas are usually colorful and Webtoon also provides background music while you read the chapters.

Now let's move on to the list, shall we?

1. Dice(ongoing)Hyunseok Yun

If you could change your life by playing a game ... Would you? And if yes, How far would you go?

I love games and the idea of fantasy world that has game-like elements to be precise, virtual reality.

* spoiler free*

We have our protagonist Dongtae, feeling like his life is a mess and wishes what if he could change it.  He is granted the power of a dice and a chance to become a DICER. Of course not everything is greener on the other side, it has its cons. If I have to compare it would be kind of like the movie Truth or Dare? Gamified life but also shows the ugly truth of human who go beyond human reasoning for the sake of selfish desires.

Great character development and you might even root for the blooming relationship Dongtae has for his beau Mio who is a DICER too. It has mystery, suspense, drama and great fighting scenes and NGL I'm a sucker for such things, so if you are into that definitely give it a try. Over all good read and it has been updated a lot since I first started so one can binge for longer period, unlike me who had to wait 😭

It was my first Webtoon so I have deep sentiments for it;

How I discovered webtoons? I discovered them by chance when I was tired of reading Manga and wanted 'colored manga?' My only regret is that I am very restless and cannot wait for the story to complete hence I usually wait for them so that I can binge till the end and not have endless nightmares because of unanswered questions and cliffhangers ughh

2. Tower of God(ongoing)SIU

Twenty-fifth Baam or simply Baam is our main protagonist, he is not over powered or been blessed with many magical stuffs like many other shounen stories tend to be, it has a slow start, if you want badass character right off the start sorry this manhwa ain't for you. But if you have patience and ample of free time (because you will need to binge many chapters at one go to understand instead of waiting for single chapter once a week T_T) then you will sure love it 🥰

Baam (or night in Korean) feels like a child of my own as I see him grow into the person he is now from the time I started to read this Manhwa (P.S. 2015-2016). I usually like to read the introduction for any manga/manhwa/manhua that I read, so below I'll be giving basic introduction and if you the type to skip intro and just jump straight into the storyline you may skip this part.

The story follows our main character Baam who was born in darkness and at the bottom of the vast and mysterious Tower. His only ray of light being a girl named Rachel, they grew up together and has been his light and happiness. But Rachel didn't want to be in the dark her whole life; she wanted to climb to the top of the Tower. Baam was devastated to see Rachel go, so he decided to follow her, in hope to reunite with his childhood best friend even if it means dying.

Pretty intense, eh? 👀 Idk bout y’all but "For the sake of Friendship" theme always pulls me towards such story-line 💞

It has been adapted to anime if anyone is interested to watch ⌚ 👀 (Season 1)

Now this series of webtoon has been ongoing like a long long night (Baam), get it??

3. Athena Complex (completed), Kaisar

A bit of change of air for now and it is a COMPLETED series... oooohh I love the word "completed" 💕

I love love love greek mythologies 😍 (any Percy Jackson fans?) And this is based on Greek Mythology between Poseidon and Athena, now this series gives us an alternative universe where they both are school kids in modern Earth world, *ahem* ... also Athena is a looker and gives a bishounen, meaning a young man of androgynous beauty (although she a girl technically)

It's a love-hate relationship; between Modern Athena and Poseidon on Earth World 😚😬 I have a soft spot for love-hate relationships 🤭

It's a shorter series compared to the ones I mentioned before, I love the artwork and storytelling 😍 Overall it's a fun, good read, get yourself coffee, tea or whatever comforts you and get on the journey of a blissful read.

4. Yumi's Cells(ongoing),

Donggeon Lee

Time for some slice of life, now I'm not a slice of life person :3 I like fantasy, things that are different from the ordinary, because I'm bored of mundane world and love to read or watch things that make me escape into a different realm, this shit gets me higher than drugs (don't do drugs!!!)  But I have to say Yumi's Cells have broken through the wall I placed and now lives in my head rent free. And the funny thing is it's a story about a girl name Yumi and her cells, yessss the cells in her body got lines and characters of their own.

It has much shorter pages in a chapter compared to most mangas and good for a binge read. If you are familiar with the Disney movie- Inside Out (GOD I love that movie), you will probably have an idea about the type of manhwa it is. It’s fun, humorous, sad, and tear jerking at some places, I read this when I had a bad break up so maybe that's why it was tear jerking for ... anywayyyyy TMI, Do read it if you are more of shoujo, and Rom-com, slice of life person 🤗

5. Siren's Lament(ongoing),
Instantmiso

Even if I love action, fights and dramas and suspense there are times when I need to please a tiny part of me which is cheesy AF 🤭

A cheesy love story between a girl and a Siren 💖

Introduction: Content with her ordinary life, Lyra is somewhat of a wallflower. However, her comfortable lifestyle suddenly goes astray when she accidentally plunges into the world of sirens. Entangled in a curse, Lyra will learn that her world may be a lot bigger than she had ever imagined

My favorite thing about webtoon other than its beautiful art and storytelling- it is the music. Did you know you could read a chapter and have a BGM that fits the mood for that chapter??? I did not and so it was a pleasant surprise, the music pulls you in and your brain produces "feeling good chemicals". How cool is that?!

*Another Notable Mention by same Author- Where Tangents Meet (completed)

Introduction: As Landon and Rachelle venture into falling in love with one another, they hit ruptures in the road. The more they learn about each other, the more they discover about themselves in the midst of encountering jealousy, scandals, accidents, and misunderstandings. Despite the losses and hurt, they face together, they reconcile and create an unbreakable bond that guides them not only into a stronger relationship, but also to self-acceptance.

6. Noblesse(completed),
Jeho Son/Kwangsu Lee

Noblesse tells the story of a powerful noble - Cadis Etrama Di Raizel (aka Rai) - who has been asleep for 820 years. He goes to a school, where he reunites with his loyal servant Frankenstein. Who happens to run a school in the modern world and where Rai meets new people and make friends who have absolutely no idea that the man they befriending is a pureblood 820 year old man who knows nothing about the modern world 🤭

It's a long series which I LOOOVVEEEEEE, and it's COMPLETED, GOOD LOOKING CHARACTERS, OVER POWERED MC, ugh... also plenty of surprises and a thrill as you unlock more idea about the story line, cool action scenes, now I'm gonna say it's a vampire story, but forget about your typical blood sucking, can't go out at daylight shit, throw your knowledge about cliché vampire stereotypes into the dustbin and then go for an enjoyable read 🤗

It has anime adaptations too, both Korean and Japanese, if you are interested 👀

7. God of High school (ongoing),
Yongje Park

Now now the anime adaptation has been getting lots of hype for it as it should be, typical Shonen manhwa, lots of action, "for sake of friendship", "power of friendship", being the best fighter ❤ 💪 Butttt we love Shonen because of that don't we? The setting is similar to the movie DOA (Dead or Alive) where multiple martial artists/fighters/ability users are invited to the Tournament and winners will be given prizes. But what is the prize that people are willing to risk their live for?

I remember people would joke about how we will achieve victory in life once Jin Mori (God of High School MC) wins GOH, when Baam will reach and conquer the top of The Tower... the pain of webtoon readerssss 🤣🤣🤣 Anyways jokes apart, the webtoon is thrilling and funny and has good story, gives you lots of insight and comedic scenes that you wouldn't find in animation (no shades intended) 🤗

8. True Beauty(ongoing), Yaongyi

This might be relatable to teens and girls who experience low self-esteem because of the beauty standards around the world. Feeling like you are not enough because you don't really fit into the standards. Now we have heard it couple of times that True Beauty is what is on the inside and not the outside, but it's not easy isn't it?

True Beauty follows the story of a girl named Jugyeong Lim who uses her talent in makeup to transform her life by improving her looks. And she also meets two friends with a past Suho Lee and Seojun Han. A beautiful chemistry between both the male leads of the story gives you anxiety about who she will end up with 🤔 Maybe I'll have to wait for you drama to air to know that. There are many female readers of this webtoon and we can see why, the Cinderella theme story seems to be the dream of many young girls and hopelessly romantic people

😌

The webtoon is funny AF, I can't even count the number of times I binge read it at 3 AM in morning and had to control my laugh to not wake up my landlady downstairs 😆

9. Lookism (ongoing), Taejun Park

Now think of beauty standards but from a male point of view, life is already hard as man in a patriarchal society but now they have to maintain beauty standards too. Lookism talks and shows us through their art and story about the ugly truth of world blinded by the idea of "looks". Our MC is another "unknown guy" who by the some mysterious ways become a super good looking guy with all the right features matching the beauty standard. Again beauty is on inside not outside theme.

But love the different takes it take outside if the main character story, we see ugly sides of society mainly the country Republic of South Korea, it has lots of controversies in the country and we can see why 😌

10. The Gamer (ongoing)
Sangyoung Seong/ Sang-A

Nuf with series related to ongoing world problems, Lemme head back to my favourite fantasy world and nothing beats THE GAMER for me, this easily takes the no. 1 spot for me based on my choice and preference. A modern fantasy world with gamified elements, where the higher level you are the more stronger you

are also even more deeper into the abyss. Like Nietzsche said " If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back". There is no shortcut to life and if there is obvious it involves risk, so how to avoid risks? Being OVERPOWERED ofcourse which is like a broken bug in a game but instead with life 😌

Life of Han Jihan was pretty normal until one day he wakes up with the ability of a gamer like a game character would ability to improve stats by training and leveling up, and using mana for handling magic, like any typical rpg video game, as a gamer myself this story setting is obviously a dream come true, the story follows his adventures and also meeting other "abilitu users" and learning more about the abyss and what he wishes to do from now on since he acquired this cheat of life 😌🤝🏻

Special Mention-For the Sake of Sita (completed), Haga

*HUGE MODERATE SPOILER ALERTS*

Words cannot express how much I love this manhwa but numbers can. A 10/10. One can always learn new things and sometimes through unconventional methods like reading a webtoon. The story is about a girl named Sita and it gives us a beautiful story line of the practice that Nepal does "Kumari-Living Goddess". The life of a once Kumari is not as easy as walking on flower petals like it used to be when they were training to be Kumari. It's a bitter sweet story and romance between a Nepali girl and a Korean tourist who fell in love with Sita and did things FOR THE SAKE OF SITA.

It did get controversial because Indians mistook the meaning and condemned the author for the blasphemy of Goddess Sita, but I would like to clarify that it's not defaming Goddess Sita of the Hindu Religion, but a girl named Sita who was a Kumari and considered a living Goddess according to the beliefs.

I love the story line, I discovered it when I was fed up of ongoing webtoons and had to wait for new chapters, and I found this gem 💎 ❤  It's a must read for all. 😍🥰

Hope you enjoyed the list. Happy Reading!
