BEST ALBUM: BLACK OUT by Woo (Hip-hop/rap)
If you are a fan of Korean R&B and Hip-hop then among the lot that have been released till date this year, there are two albums which you absolutely cannot and SHOULD NOT miss out on. One is DPR Live’s ‘Is anybody out there?’ and the second is Woo Won Jae’s (now known as Woo) ‘BLACK OUT’, which is also our pick as the best album that was released in August. The album was released out of nowhere on with little or no promotion but it was received so well by everyone and we believe that it’s the best work of Woo’s so far. Woo’s messages across the songs are quite mature and raw about how he has reflected on his past self, present as well his regrets over the years of his musical journey with reference to his relationship with his close ones. According to Woo, he never really intended on basing the album on a storyline of that sort but it just so happened that it all fit so well track after track. If you listen to the tracks closely, they are more cohesive and the production is also more sophisticated than his previous releases. Sure some might disagree but this album’s sound felt very western to a certain extent. He has accepted himself that people wouldn’t necessarily consider ‘BLACK OUT’ or simply his works as pure Hip-hop but he is okay with it and would rather not put himself in any music genre. He also wishes to simply continue to make music he likes. Lastly it has to be mentioned that feauturing So!YoOn! was sooooooooo unexpected but in a good way as the collaboration was a treat!!!!

Pleasant surprise: Fame by Han Seung Woo
Album poster: Fame
This August we got comebacks from former X1 members (a project boy group, now disbanded, formed through MNet’s survival show called Produce 101) like Kim Yo han and Han Seung Woo but what fans didn’t see coming was the latter’s solo release. Han Seung Woo released his first mini-album called ‘Fame’ consisting of six tracks. Why was it a pleasant surprise for us? He didn’t only sway us with his fantastic vocals but also the fact that the entirety of the mini album was influenced by R&B. It’s always interesting to watch idols experiment and go beyond what they are comfortable with or what audiences usually see them in i.e. pop. We would highly recommend his title track ‘Sacrifice’ and see for yourself… ain’t it amazing?
The second pleasant surprise was SURL’s collaboration with Jay Park. How to put rock and rap together … learn it from the best.

August was a fun ride as well as historic for Korean Music as a whole as just recently BTS debuted #1 in the Billboard 100 making them the first South Korean act to achieve this as well the second Asian act. Congratulations to them <3
